This modern shophouse design might become one of design pioneer of small scale urban housing in or near the city (suburb). Shophouse is a vernacular architecture building originally from Southeast Asia. This shophouse may become new urban house concept. New urban house concept that like a small office home office; combine small retail business with dwelling upstairs. Actually, this shophouse more than jewelry store (garakji) and living space for its owner. This shophouse building provides and encourages local communication between neighbors. Its second floor becomes community hall as meeting area to discuss everything matters that happen in the neighborhood.
Built on tiny narrow site of 5 meters wide and 12 meters depth, this contemporary shophouse building has 17 meters height. Previously, the planning was just a renovation of two-story old shophouse, but bigger idea came up. This urban shophouse has total five story level. First floor (ground floor) is for jewelry shop retail business. The jewelry shop sells garakji (pair of rings) and other traditional Korean jewelry and ornamental accessories. Second floor as mentioned above is community hall, vertical alleys; like alleys in the past where neighbors can meet each other, both formal and informal to discuss neighborhood matters.Commercial residential building with sense of local neighborhood.
Third story until fifth story is for residence. Third story consist of living room, and a bedroom completed with a balcony and a bathroom. Fourth floor is family room, consist of kitchen, dining, and seating area, also outdoor balcony with busy city street panorama. Fifth floor is a bedroom completed with a bathroom and outdoor area. The outdoor area of fifth floor is roof garden.
The exterior of this contemporary shophouse building painted in gray. Metal mesh installed as walls of stairs area. Metal mesh becomes protection and vertical air circulation device. At front huge glass walls become source of natural light. The interior of its room has minimalist interior decorating. Raw exposed concrete block walls is in every room. The community hall has raw appearance interior decor, including cement flooring and non-transparent glass openings. The living spaces have hardwood flooring with wood furniture and decor accessories.
